Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay was motivated to pursue her love of the arts by her aunt Denise when she was a child. The aunt worked as an overnight nurse in order to provide her with the opportunity to study art theatre or literature. DuVernay quickly became enthralled with that 1959 West Side Story film. DuVernay learned by example that art could be an avenue for action. DuVernay was taught to be socially mindful through her mother. Even though DuVernay grew up within Compton with her parents, she spent every summer in Lowndes County Alabama where her parents lived for many generations. DuVernay's dad recalled the protests for civil rights that took place over the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the close-by town Selma in Alabama. DuVernay was inspired by the summers she spent in Alabama to inspire her future film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In the year 1990, DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. She went to the University of California Los Angeles for a degree in English in addition to African American Studies. DuVernay began producing for the broadcast industry while she was still at the college. She started as an intern with CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being assigned to sit at the house of one member of the jury and go through their garbage. DuVernay was dissatisfied with the journalism assignments she was assigned and chose to change to the field of public relations. DuVernay joined a small studio as a junior publicist immediately after graduation. In this role, she launched her own company for public relations named The DuVernay Agency in 1999. Apart from PR, the agency established several lifestyle platforms including Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful.
